Inspirational Moment:

The Inspirational Moment was introduced by Jim Feek.  The topic was Kulula Airline.  Jim regaled the crowd with witty quotes from the employees of Kulula Airline, a low-cost South African airline that doesn’t take itself too seriously.  The air stewards say things like “Ladies and Gentlemen, we’ve reached cruising altitude and will be turning down the cabin lights.  This is for your comfort, and to enhance the appearance of your flight attendants.”

Program Speaker: Lani Buck

Program Topic: Mercy Ships

 About the program:

Mercy Ships is a fleet of floating hospital ships that has provided free medical services to developing nations since 1978.  The largest ship, the Africa Mercy, is made up of 450 volunteers who do everything from medical procedures, to barista the only floating Starbucks!  The ship is currently stationed in Sierra Leon, Africa and will continue to port along West Africa’s coast.  The typical time spent in any one port is about ten months.  The ship has six state of the art operating rooms, intensive care and ward bed space for up to 78 patients, and the only CT scan in Africa.  The Africa Mercy provides everything from dental work to cataracts surgery to cure blindness in children.  The goal of Mercy Ships is to teach and train locals to be able to provide this care long after the ship has left.

Rotary International has had a thirty-year relationship with Mercy Ships, and has donated over $33 million to their cause.  Thank you, Lani, for sharing Mercy Ships’ amazing success stories with Kirkland Rotary.

Happy Dollars: Collected by Chuck Brockway.

Overall club members are happy about the summer weather (finally!), vacations, the car show, family, friends, etc.  President Brandon Honcoop is particularly happy to be an (almost) dad!

Lucky Ticket Drawing The winning ticket number was held by: Megan Nakanishi.  Unfortunately, Megan was not the winner of the joker pot.  Estimated ticket sales in the pot: $400.  The lucky ticket holder automatically gets $10 for having the lucky ticket and a chance at the joker pot.

The meeting was adjourned at 7:45 p.m.
