Our Student of the Month Tor Jensen, who will give his talk this evening, was accompanied by his Father Eric, Mother Erica, and Stepmother Regina.

Announcements:

  • Anne Hamilton spoke about the recent District Conference.  Fifty clubs were represented.

  • The next Club Board meeting will be tomorrow, Tuesday May 19 at Rich Bergdahl’s office.  RSVP’s are requested.
  • Reading Buddies end of the year party will be May 28 at John Muir Elementary.  Cupcakes for all, books for the kids who completed the program.

Tor Jensen gave his Student of the Month talk.  He is currently Student Body President at Lake Washington High School.  He is very involved in lots of activities to improve the school.  He is engaging with kids who are not very socially involved in an attempt to get them more connected.  He plays baseball and wants to continue to do so for as long as possible.  In college he will major in International Business.  He wants to become a business leader in the sense of the Rotary Four-Way Test.  He also would like to become involved in Rotary.

Bill Woods, in a coat and tie[!!!], spoke to us about what Kirkland and the Club were like in 1965 when he joined Rotary.  Coats and ties were required at meetings then.  Meetings were always started with a song.  He was Club Song Leader for ten years.  His last stint as Song Leader ended when he had the Club singing ‘Mairzy Doats’.  Attendance was emphasized - 20-25 of the 60-70 members had perfect attendance in any given year  Kirkland in 1965 had three drugstores and three hardware stores in downtown.

Our speaker this evening was Eric Waldstein, who was a Rotary Ambassadorial Scholar from Waverly, Iowa.  He studied for his Master’s at the London School of Economics.  He works at Carillon Point for a Bill Gates ‘Incubator’ company.  He used his Master’s thesis as a basis for a project with his employer.  He works in the education field, developing curricula for a ‘History of the Universe’, starting with the Big Bang.
We then played a version of Bingo requiring us to find facts about other meeting attendees.  Harry Wagoner got the first Bingo, Anne Hamilton got the first blackout.
We had a very short Happy Dollars session – Bob Norman was happy to the tune of $50 in honor of his 50th wedding anniversary.
There is over $3000 in the pot and only six cards plus the Joker left.  Harry Wagoner drew the right ticket, but not the Joker.
No meeting next week – Memorial Day.
The meeting was adjourned at 7:30PM.
Respectfully Submitted
Acting Scribe - David Aubry
