Rotary Club of Kirkland

Meeting of the 23rd of May, 2011:

President Pat Dye opened the meeting and after Dan Bartel led us in the Pledge of Allegiance, Pat introduced our Greeter, Mekonen Giorgis and our Scribe, Rick Walter.  There were some visitors such as our exchange student Jason, who told us all about his activities like; Mariner games – Miracle League – and Space Needle. Jason has limited time left with the group so if you want to have an outing with him, talk to him or Dan Bartel. In addition, we had Chris Boland, Assistance District Governor in attendance.

Announcements: President Pat wanted to let everyone know that the baby items purchased could be given to her tonight for delivery. Patti Smith touched on Duck Dash issues.

Reminders – No meeting next week due to the three day weekend – also, no Miracle League that weekend. However, Chuck Brockway needs volunteers for the following weekend.

Brandon Honcoop inducted our newest member to the club, Chris Rusnak.  Chris will come in with classification of Photographer and was sponsored by Dan Bartel and his mentor will be Chuck Brockway.  Chris is married to current member Elizabeth Rusnak and after attending the District Confrence in Portland decided he needed to get into Rotary as well.

WELCOME TO THE CLUB CHRIS!!!

Chris Boland was in attendance to present to President Pat and the Club, The President’s Citation for Excellence Award. Pat Dye reminded everyone that is was the efforts of all members that caused this club to excel.

Don Dicks gave a presentation on the fund raising for Rotary International and where the money went. In addition, it was his great pleasure to award the Paul Harris Fellow to Alan Hoviland.

The evening’s presentation was “Getting to Know You” and Chuck Brockway was the MC.

Our first speaker was Makaylaa Powers: She runs a successful business keeping the elderly at home for as long as possible. She loves her job and is glad those services will be available to her someday (with a discount we hope). She was a dancer in Canada – part of the Canadettes (?) – Just like the Rockettes. Makaylaa has two adopted sons.  Pat Dye was her sponsor.

Our next speaker was Alan Hoviland: Al (not his real name) has a framing shop. He and his family were involved in the Timber – Construction – Fishing industries over time. He and his wife spend most of their time in Hawaii. Al’s wife, Alice, is also a member of the Kirkland Rotary. His sponsor was Lee Johnson.

Mike Hunter was our third speaker: One thing for sure about Mike, he can speed talk with the best of them. He was with Puget Sound Power and he and his wife Sharon founded a school for the deaf – his kids are deaf. He has been a member for over25 years and his sponsor was Jack Richardson.

Our final speaker was Bill Woods: Bill has been a Rotarian for 46 years and a Pharmacist for 40. Bill was active in World War II (very cool). Over those 40 plus years, Bill Woods has been the president of both the Jaycees and Rotary; On the Kirkland City Council and the Mayor of Kirkland; President of the Bank of Kirkland; received the National Award for his Community Service and also the Governor’s Award for Small Business. It seems that Bill and Kirkland got along! Jack Richardson was also his sponsor.

Diana Lanspa was the lucky raffle winner and attempted to draw the joker – instead she found the Jack of Diamonds and won $10.

With that, President Pat adjourned the meeting.

Rick Walter, Scribe for an evening!!!  (Editor Note: Thank you Rick for stepping in at the last minute and those that also volunteered)
