The meeting was called to order by President Rich Bergdahl at 6:30pm. The flag salute was led by Retired Chief Eric Olsen. Bill Woods was called to the podium by our president to acknowledge Bill's upcoming 90th Halloween Birthday, and to honor Bill's 50 years of Rotary Service. The club sang a rousing Happy Birthday to Bill.

Jason Overleese introduced our speaker Jan Rutherford (a former Green Beret) who traveled up from Portland, Oregon. Jan's numerous accomplishments were given in last week's minutes.

Jan's Topic: Self-Reliant Leadership: Embrace Adversity as the Crucible to Strengthen Your Team. Developing Self-Reliance in Yourself and Others.

Jan shared several personal stories of his experiences in becoming a Green Beret and how those same traits helped develop the leadership qualities he possesses. He emphasized the most important leadership traits as Character Based. These are 1) courage, 2) wisdom and knowledge, 3) justice and fair-mindedness, 4) humanity and generosity, 5) temperance and discipline, and 6) transcendence or purposefulness. He continued to state that the greatest asset of a good leader is willingness to change.

In which of the following would you actively participate:

Help with a turnover – when one family moves out and the place either needs to be painted, small repairs need to be made, maybe new flooring put in, maybe needs a new appliance, etc. Make the place as good as new. Could be done over a weekend. Maybe provide a welcome basket for the new family moving in.

Adopt-a-family when they move in (until they move out) – help spruce up their apartment with furnishings and maybe continue to supply things they need throughout their time at Attain Housing’s property (ex: school supplies for their kids as they go back to school, holiday presents during the holiday season, etc.)

READING BUDDIES PROGRAM

JOHN MUIR ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
Location:  14012 132nd Avenue N.E., Kirkland, WA   98034
Meet with your group in the Library (next to the Office)

Purpose:  Reading Buddies: To create enthusiasm for reading among 3rd and 4th  graders.  To develop a life-long interest and love of reading.

How the programs work:
Reading Buddies:
John Muir Elementary has selected the books that are used in our program.  (Our Rotary provided the funds for these books.)  There are five to six copies of each title.  You and your students read the same book.

The teachers and Tim Platt (the Librarian)  have selected  the students that will participate in the Reading Buddies program.  These students know how to read and have good study habits.

You and your students select the same book that will be read.   These are “chapter” books at the appropriate level of reading for the students.  You assign the number of chapters that need to be read each week.   Each group will have 4 students and one Leader (You).

Each group will meet once a week for ½ hour during the students’ lunch break.  The students will bring their lunch with them to the group, along with their book.    You select the day of the week  (i.e. Mondays, Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursdays) that you wish to lead a group.  (You keep the same day and time each week.    If you need to change your day of the week, you make those arrangements for the alternative day with your students and notify Tim Platt, the Librarian.
Tim Platt can be reached at:  tplatt@lwsd.org

You and your students decide how many chapters will be read each week.  These chapters will be discussed the following week.  The Leader reads the same chapters that have been assigned to the students each week.   You can decide to stop leading a group at the end of every book.  This allows a Volunteer to try out the program and not be committed for an entire school year.   The first groups for Reading Buddies begin the first full week of November and end at the holiday break in mid-December.  The next book/group begins in the second week of January.

If you would like to be a Reading Buddies Leader, please contact me at:  pat@1brg.com  or call me:

Please Note:  If you have not been a volunteer within Lake Washington School District, they have a form that needs to be completed.  Let me know you need the form and I will email it to you.  Thanks.
