2024-12-09 18:40:00Z	Dec. 09, 2024	Maura Berndsen of Listen and Talk	Listen and Talk is a specialized listening and spoken language program for hearing impaired children	Dec. 09, 2024 6:40 p.m.	Listening and Spoken Language is an approach that relies on newborn hearing screenings, supportive intervention, and hearing technology to empower children with hearing loss to listen and communicate verbally with the surrounding world. Listen and Talk families partner with highly-specialized providers to utilize auditory-verbal strategies that support their child’s language development. Maura Berndsen began her career at Listen and Talk in 1996 where she has served as executive director since 2018. She earned a Bachelor of Arts in Deaf Education from Fontbonne University, a Master of Arts in education from University of Texas-San Antonio, and a Listening and Spoken Language Specialist Certified Auditory-Verbal Therapist designation from AG Bell Academy for Listening and Spoken Language. Maura serves as a member of Washington Center for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Youth’s Statewide Outreach Team and has volunteered in leadership roles for AG Bell Academy for Listening and Spoken Language, OPTION Schools, Inc., Washington State Hands and Voices, and numerous state-level and national-level advisory councils and work groups. She has shared her knowledge with others by volunteering for Global Foundation for Children with Hearing Loss, where she supported their efforts in Vietnam. Maura has also provided presentations, contributed to publications, and supported research related to the development of listening and spoken language in children with hearing loss, as well as best practices for the children and their families. Maura is a nationally recognized advocate for increased access to specialized services for the diverse community of children with hearing level differences and their families. When not working at Listen and Talk, Maura enjoys spending time with her husband Kevin and daughter, Sophie.	View

Over the past 31 years, KidVantage has grown to three locations in King and Kitsap counties. KidVantage helps children have what they need to grow, play, learn and thrive by providing essential care, safety, and health goods for children who are experiencing the stresses of economic insecurity, systemic inequities, or family disruption. Kids, ages birth through 12, get shoes, diapers, formula, blankets, coats, and much more from KidVantage and its service partners. KidVantage also provides for expectant and postpartum mothers, supplying maternity wear, personal care goods, and mother-infant support items. The Sustainability Ambassadors' mission is to “rapidly advance a sustainable future” and they have some exciting ways that they are leading by example at home, at school, and in our neighborhoods. Presenters will share their work on… Low Carbon Commuting Switching to Heat Pumps Going Solar Shrinking Lawns and Going Native Plus… Strategies for inspiring more youth to engage in solutions Collaboration In conversation with Rotarians, the Ambassadors would like to explore ways that they might work together across generations and neighborhoods on reducing our collective carbon footprint through transportation choices, energy conservation, home electrification, tree canopy, and water conservation. They would like to inform, inspire, and involve the Rotary Club in these efforts. The Ambassadors admire Rotary's service-oriented mission and would like to combine forces wherever practical. There are so many solutions. The Ambassadors have three goals for this presentation and in follow up with club members: Establish an annual tradition of reporting to your members scheduled far in advance so you know and we know the timeline and goals. Identify one or several points of personal contact with your members to enhance direct communications on shared impact projects, school or neighborhood campaigns. Collaborate with your members on impact storytelling, a way to track actual impact aligned with the city’sSustainability Strategic Plan and/or their Transportation Strategic Plan. These data-driven stories featuring the well-informed voice of youth will help all of us showcase and celebrate what’s working, nurturing the conditions for more of it to happen. The CIS Site Coordinator, in collaboration with the John Muir Elementary Counselor, will share insights about this impactful partnership. They will also highlight the positive difference the Rotary Club's contributions have made in the Muir community. Working directly in 39 schools across the Renton, Lake Washington, Issaquah, and Seattle school districts, Communities in Schools support students who are furthest from educational justice. CIS's student-centered approach is designed to promote educational, social and emotional development of students and position them to succeed both inside and outside the classroom. Lila has always been passionate about equity, community building, and bringing culturally responsive practices into education. She has worked with young people in a variety of settings including as a paraeducator in Vermont, a substitute teacher in Seattle, and an English teacher at a bilingual school in Bogotá, Colombia. She also has experience working as an advocate for survivors of interpersonal violence and uses her knowledge of trauma-informed practices to guide the work she does at CIS.	View

Successes in distributing the musical instruments donated by Music4Life	Feb. 03, 2025 6:40 p.m.	Lake Washington School District began partnering with Music4Life in the 2023-2024 school year. This program supports music students by providing instruments to them free of charge. Stephanie Miller, who is a teaching and learning specialist in health and physical education as well as visual and performing arts, will describe the successes experienced by students who have been given the opportunity to participate in music programs through the Music4Life program. Stephanie has been a teacher in Lake Washington School District since 2017. She taught at Rush Elementary School, Wilder Elementary School, and Timberline Middle School. Beginning in 2022, she began working as teacher on special assignment to support all visual and performing arts in the district. In this role she supports visual art, theater arts, and all music programs K-12.	View

She oversees coordination with the I-405 Improvement projects, implementation of the RapidRide K Line, Transportation Strategic Plan, NPDES Permit compliance, and the Surface Water Strategic Plan. With more than 25 years in public service, Sarah prioritizes community engagement and environmental resilience, ensuring our public spaces and services meet the evolving needs of a vibrant community. Sarah holds a Master’s in Public Administration and enjoys walking, urban hiking, and family bike rides.	View

2025-03-10 18:40:00Z	Mar. 10, 2025	Carmin Dalziel of Kirkland Community Foundation	History, accomplishments, and transition of the Kirkland Community Foundation	Mar. 10, 2025 6:40 p.m.	Carmin Dalziel is the executive director of the Kirkland Community Foundation. During Carmin's talk, she plans to share about the foundation's history, key accomplishments in the community, and the transition from a parks foundation to a broader community foundation. She'll highlight the foundation's role in supporting local nonprofits and initiatives, as well as how it helps people in our community build their best life through philanthropy and partnerships. In its first five years, the Foundation raised over $443,000 for park projects. During this time, it became clear that Kirklanders’ interests extended beyond park enhancements to broader community initiatives. In 2020, recognizing the community’s expanding needs, KCF rebranded and broadened its mission to become the Kirkland Parks & Community Foundation. With an expanded mission, KCF can now support a variety of causes important to Kirkland’s residents. While park projects remain a focus, KCF has taken on other issues, like homelessness and education. Its first major project was raising funds for a counseling center at The Sophia Way, a shelter for women and children. When the COVID-19 pandemic began, KCF acted quickly to provide support for homeless families and hungry school kids. Carmin is a long-term Kirkland resident, enjoying the beauty of the Pacific Northwest through hiking and kayaking, and frequently visiting her favorite local parks like Waverly Beach Park. With a successful career spanning various industries, Carmin brings a wealth of experience in business development, government, non-profits, and churches to her role as Executive Director of the Kirkland Community Foundation. She has a deep passion for leadership, fostering high-performing teams, and building strong community relations. Carmin has also been recognized on the Northshore Wall of Honor for her contributions. With her grown daughter now thriving on her own and her loyal dog, Pinot, by her side, Carmin is fully invested in the work KCF does to enhance the Kirkland community. She is proud to contribute her fundraising expertise, public speaking skills, and dedication to sustainable growth, and she is excited to help shape a brighter, more inclusive future for all.	View

The students have been conducting research on the topic of meat alternatives and alternative protein options for consumers and want to share their findings with our community members. Through forums like this one, the group aims to increase awareness of this relevant topic. The students look forward to virtually engaging with the Rotary Club of Kirkland on a range of different perspectives, pros and cons of meat alternatives on April 14th, during the Rotary meeting. It will be a fun-style, 15-minute long educational presentation with an opportunity for feedback. The Lake Washington High School FFA Agricultural Issues Forum team consists of Marianna Makowska, Tanushri Goyal, Haituka Anandakumar, Maya Paul, and Bella Delgado.	View

2025-04-21 18:40:00Z	Apr. 21, 2025	Dr. Natalie Ellington of Eileen & Callie's Place	Empowering young women to sustain an independent lifestyle	Apr. 21, 2025 6:40 p.m.	Transitioning from adolescence to adulthood is a critical period that shapes the future of young individuals. For those who age out of foster care, this transition is often fraught with challenges and uncertainties. In Washington state alone, over 500 youth age out of foster care every year upon reaching 18, leaving many without the necessary skills or support to navigate their new reality. This situation is dire, as within 12 to 18 months, many of these youth find themselves homeless, incarcerated, and often without a high school diploma. The need for a trusting adult in their lives becomes even more apparent when considering the trauma they have experienced. In response to these pressing needs, Eileen & Callie's Place was established as a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization specifically to support young ladies aged out of foster care. Eileen & Callie's mission is clear and impactful: to empower, educate, and coach these young ladies, with a vision that all will have a safe place to live, the opportunity to become independent, and the skills needed to maintain a positive and productive lifestyle. Dr. Natalie Ellington is the founder and executive director of Eileen & Callie's Place.	View
