Advocating for condominium homeowners across the United States
Sep. 16, 2024 6:40 p.m.
From Alaska to Florida and Hawaii to Maine, common interest communities (better known as community associations or condos, co-ops and HOAs) are everywhere. This program will explore how legislation influences association governance and operations in Washington State and across the nation. In addition, we'll discuss the role of the business industry and why homeowner-centric advocacy is critical for superlative legislative outcomes.
Homeowners of America (HOA) United is a nonprofit organization led by volunteers that connects homeowners to provide advocacy, collaboration, education, empowerment, and inspiration to create positive, transformative impacts for common interest communities. HOA United relies on the engagement and donations from members across the United States.
Condo Connection is a highly-developed volunteer passion project dedicated to maintaining healthy, vibrant common interest communities through access to information. Condoconnection.org applies a pragmatic approach to provide access to the best concepts, content and ideas homeowners and volunteers can immediately apply in their communities and offers learning and engagement opportunities for individual homeowners, volunteer leaders, and community managers. The bi-weekly CIC Info Bytes newsletter contains dozens of news articles and insights about topics that directly and indirectly impact community associations.
Steve Horvath has been an active part of the Seattle condominium community for over a decade as a multi-term board member and committee volunteer. Steve founded Condo Connection to provide free education and resources, the SMAARTE Group to provide homeowner-centric consulting services, and co-founded HOA United where he actively volunteers as a national advocate for legislative reforms that balance the reasonable expectations and needs of homeowners with the responsibilities of community associations.

Oct. 21, 2024 6:40 p.m.
Carol Reitz is a six-year member of the 150-member Rotary Club of Bainbridge Island, and was the chair of the Rotary Club of Bainbridge Island Auction & Rummage Sale in 2023. Carol will discuss with Kirkland Rotarians "Why do a rummage sale?" The Bainbridge Island club has been using the rummage sale as its primary fundraising tool for over 60 years. It’s a long-term commitment that will provide more benefits than just dollars.
Carol was raised in Minnesota, and graduated from University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire with a degree in music. She found a job thanks to her MBA in finance from the University of St. Thomas, St. Paul, Minnesota. She retired from Weyerhauser's Management Consulting group in Federal Way when her son was born 26 years ago. Her son graduated from Mount Si High School in Snoqualmie, and Carol accompanied the excellent Mount Si High School choirs for five years. Carol is now the committee chair for the Rotary Positive Peace Action group and the Mentorship process. She is also the president of the Bainbridge Island Japanese American Community.

Listen and Talk is a specialized listening and spoken language program for hearing impaired children
Dec. 09, 2024 6:40 p.m.
Listening and Spoken Language is an approach that relies on newborn hearing screenings, supportive intervention, and hearing technology to empower children with hearing loss to listen and communicate verbally with the surrounding world. Listen and Talk families partner with highly-specialized providers to utilize auditory-verbal strategies that support their child’s language development.
Maura Berndsen began her career at Listen and Talk in 1996 where she has served as executive director since 2018. She earned a Bachelor of Arts in Deaf Education from Fontbonne University, a Master of Arts in education from University of Texas-San Antonio, and a Listening and Spoken Language Specialist Certified Auditory-Verbal Therapist designation from AG Bell Academy for Listening and Spoken Language.
Maura serves as a member of Washington Center for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Youth’s Statewide Outreach Team and has volunteered in leadership roles for AG Bell Academy for Listening and Spoken Language, OPTION Schools, Inc., Washington State Hands and Voices, and numerous state-level and national-level advisory councils and work groups. She has shared her knowledge with others by volunteering for Global Foundation for Children with Hearing Loss, where she supported their efforts in Vietnam.
Maura has also provided presentations, contributed to publications, and supported research related to the development of listening and spoken language in children with hearing loss, as well as best practices for the children and their families.
Maura is a nationally recognized advocate for increased access to specialized services for the diverse community of children with hearing level differences and their families.
When not working at Listen and Talk, Maura enjoys spending time with her husband Kevin and daughter, Sophie.

Connecting for kids, because every child counts
Jan. 06, 2025 6:40 p.m.
KidVantage, formerly “Eastside Baby Corner” was founded in 1990 by a pediatric nurse practitioner with insight into what kids need for healthy development, and what families need to care for their children. Over the past 31 years, KidVantage has grown to three locations in King and Kitsap counties. KidVantage helps children have what they need to grow, play, learn and thrive by providing essential care, safety, and health goods for children who are experiencing the stresses of economic insecurity, systemic inequities, or family disruption.
Kids, ages birth through 12, get shoes, diapers, formula, blankets, coats, and much more from KidVantage and its service partners. KidVantage also provides for expectant and postpartum mothers, supplying maternity wear, personal care goods, and mother-infant support items. Kids are warm, healthy, safe, and better prepared to fulfill their own potential because of KidVantage.
Helen Banks Routon is the director of development and community relations at KidVantage.

Sustainability Ambassadors work advancing the city's Sustainability & Transportation Strategic Plans
Jan. 13, 2025 6:40 p.m.
Students of the Sustainability Ambassadors Kirkland Team will engage the Rotary Club of Kirkland around a range of impact campaigns that they are facilitating in collaboration with the city of Kirkland to advance the city's Sustainability Strategic Plan and Transportation Strategic Plan. The Sustainability Ambassadors' mission is to “rapidly advance a sustainable future” and they have some exciting ways that they are leading by example at home, at school, and in our neighborhoods. Presenters will share their work on…
Collaboration
In conversation with Rotarians, the Ambassadors would like to explore ways that they might work together across generations and neighborhoods on reducing our collective carbon footprint through transportation choices, energy conservation, home electrification, tree canopy, and water conservation. They would like to inform, inspire, and involve the Rotary Club in these efforts. The Ambassadors admire Rotary's service-oriented mission and would like to combine forces wherever practical. There are so many solutions.
The Ambassadors have three goals for this presentation and in follow up with club members:
The Student Ambassadors invite Rotarians to join them in their mission to rapidly advance a sustainable future right here in our community.

Rotary Impact at John Muir Elementary in Partnership with Communities in Schools
Jan. 27, 2025 6:40 p.m.
John Muir Elementary, part of the Lake Washington School District, is proud to partner with Communities in Schools (CIS). The CIS Site Coordinator, in collaboration with the John Muir Elementary Counselor, will share insights about this impactful partnership. They will also highlight the positive difference the Rotary Club's contributions have made in the Muir community.
Working directly in 39 schools across the Renton, Lake Washington, Issaquah, and Seattle school districts, Communities in Schools support students who are furthest from educational justice. CIS's student-centered approach is designed to promote educational, social and emotional development of students and position them to succeed both inside and outside the classroom.
Lila has always been passionate about equity, community building, and bringing culturally responsive practices into education. She has worked with young people in a variety of settings including as a paraeducator in Vermont, a substitute teacher in Seattle, and an English teacher at a bilingual school in Bogotá, Colombia. She also has experience working as an advocate for survivors of interpersonal violence and uses her knowledge of trauma-informed practices to guide the work she does at CIS. |
