Jason introduced Bill and Carren Felt, members of the Federal Way Rotary Club, who gave a presentation on the Zambia Project to treat Malaria and provide mosquito nets there. They collected $700,000 from 12 clubs, with a matching grant from the foundation to fund the largest Rotary-sponsored Malaria project, ever. The host club was the Kalulushi Club in Zambia and they were so happy to have this expedition to their country that they threw a parade for them. Malaria is deadly in children, in that it claims the life of a child every 45 seconds. It is a treatable and preventable disease but is a huge problem for Sub-Sahara Africa where the average temperature is 80%, with standing water and sewage everywhere. Adults tend to build up an immunity so treatment works for them. But there were 216 Million cases in 2010, where 655,000 people died. 3.3 Billion are at risk with 80% of them in that region. The delegation delivered 6,500 mosquito nets, administered 10,000 vaccines for Malaria, including 2,200 pregnant women.
