Areli presented her experiences from attending RYLA (Rotary Youth Leadership Academy) along with ~110 of her closest friends from Dist. 5030 and even BC!  They were able to work with and learn from guest speakers on leadership, attitude and style.  Thanks for going, Areli!

Inductions:
Amy Mutal inducted Bret and Monica into the Club.  Scott B will be Monica’s mentor; Brett’s is TBD.  Monica chose Kirkland Rotary because she wants to get involved in the community; she works at Boeing Everett and lives in Redondo.  Brett is a friend of Pres Steve, enjoys IPA’s and has 3 sons in college so he has time to get involved.  Welcome Monica and Brett!

Inspiration:
Rich B inspired us with an introduction of Attain Housing’s Lynn Sanborn (Advisory Board Member) and Kathy Fleming (Executive Director) http://www.attainhousing.org/ .  Formerly KITH, ATTAIN helps homeless families on the Eastside find and stay in housing.  They own 32 units and provide case management and eviction management services to families with kids.  They have Adopt a Property and Community Supper events, as well as present the 7 Hills of Kirkland bike ride every Memorial Day.  All need volunteers!  Thank you, Lynn and Kathy, for all you do!
Rich and Nan, who previously broke all the odds and won two 1st prizes in last year’s Duck Dash, presented those winnings of $2,000 to ATTAIN as a surprise.  Rich stopped tearing up long enough to thank ATTAIN, and we all truly thank Rich and Nan for demonstrating this level of generosity to the community!

Program:
Scott B introduced our speaker, Barbie Collins Young, the Executive Director of the Kirkland Downtown Association (KDA) https://kirklanddowntown.org/ .  A long time Kirkland resident, Barbie has worked hard to bring the KDA and Kirkland Chamber together, and to thus join business and the community at large.  KDA is a nonprofit 501(C)(3).  They support many local organizations, including Kirkland Rotary and ATTAIN Housing by giving us space at their events.  Those events are too numerous to list:
  • Wednesday Farmers’ Market (16 years)
  • Summer Concerts (Thursdays)
  • Kids Concerts (Tuesdays)
  • Celebrate Kirkland (July 4)
  • Classic Car Show
  • Partner of Summerfest
  • Winterfest
  • Wine Walks (next one is 4/20; that should be interesting…taxi; don’t drive please)
  • Art Walks
  • Clean Sweeps of downtown
  • Flower Pots (sponsor one downtown for $250-$500/year!)
And of course, join KDA!  Kirkland’s a great place to live, own a business and visit!
Thanks, Barbie for all you do.

Pres Steve adjourned the meeting at 7:30pm after sharing his expertise in optometry.  Way to get back on track, although years ago meetings ended at 7:45. ?
With tongue-in-cheek respect, your Scribe, Brian T. (Tuttle)
