The Rotary Club of Kirkland held a meeting at The Woodmark Hotel on August 9, 2021. Rotarians attended in person; online attendance has been paused for the summer.
President Dave DeBois rang the bell at 6:30 p.m., calling the club meeting to order.
Bella Chaffey led the membership in the Pledge of Allegiance. Scott Becker served as greeter, and sold Joker Pool tickets.
Attending were George Anderson, Bob Auslander, Scott Becker, Bella Chaffey, Gary Cohn, Dave DeBois, Margie Glenn, Alan Hoviland, Mike Hunter, James Meniketti, Joanne Primavera, Patti Smith, Alice Volpe, Rick Walter, and John Woodbery.

President Dave introduced Pete Anderson, who has applied for membership in the club.
Announcements:
President Dave called on Patti Smith, who provided details on the baby shower for James Nevers and his wife on Monday, August 23. Patti circulated again the sign up to guess the baby’s weight, date and hour of arrival, and to suggest a boy’s name. Gifts are optional.
President Dave called on International Services Chair Joanne Primavera, who provided Duck Adoption envelopes for returning ticket stubs and money. Joanne would like the envelopes back filled with tickets and money.
President Dave called on Scott Becker, who has rustled up a deck of cards and the Joker Pool is back on! The cost is three tickets for $5. The Club earns half the money when someone pulls the Joker from the deck and the Club guarantees a win of at least $100.
President Dave called on Mike Hunter, who will be selling Duck Adoptions this week from 3 to 5 p.m. at the Kirkland Wednesday Market. Feel free to join him for some “Duck-filled” fun.
Program:
President Dave introduced the speaker, Robert Lerch and Nikki Johnson, of Pickles Playland, who explained how they take care of peoples’ dogs at their two facilities, one in Redmond Town Center, and the other here at Carillon Point. “Pickles” is an actual dog, found abandoned on Hwy. 405. Even with a heart concern, Pickles is now a full-grown dog. Pickles’ customers pay a membership fee and then pay for the services they need for their pets. Pickles employees are dedicated to the care of the pets, sleeping on site with the dogs, having play time with ice cream treats, and providing small pools of water on hot days. There were numerous questions from very engaged Rotarians. Thank you, Robert and Nikki for an entertaining and informative program.
President Dave thanked Robert and Nikki for a tremendous presentation. A veteran racing duck was presented, and gift of 600 pounds of food will be made in the name of the presenter to Harvest Against Hunger.
Joker Pool:
Nikki Johnson was asked to draw the winning ticket, and it was Scott Becker’s ticket which earned him $10. He had no luck pulling the Joker from the deck.
