The club’s board of directors met last week, with a very full agenda. Please note that the board meeting dates have changed for this year, and the board now meets at 5:30 p.m. New dates and times may be found in the Calendar on the Rotary website.
Directors discussed adopting the District Youth Protection Policy. When Rotarians work directly with minors, those Rotarians need to complete the Youth Service Volunteer Application contained within the Youth Protection Policy. This is primarily for Rotary Youth programs such as RYLA or Interact, but may be applicable for Reading Buddies and Miracle League. The board will consider the adoption during the October meeting.
Another key item was a proposal to donate club funds to Proposition 1 (November 3 ballot) to increase the property tax levy to fund a new fire station east of I-405 just north of EvergreenHealth campus, improvements in three existing fire stations, a dedicated Aid Car at Fire Station 22 in Houghton, cross staff the new station 24 in North Juanita, and add firefighter/EMT staff at Station 26 in North Rose Hill. After considerable discussion, the board elected to stay with the policy of not endorsing or opposing ballot measures.
The Vocational Services Committee chair asked the board to consider an introductory membership rate for previous scholarship recipients, students of the month, and outstanding educators who live in the community and wish to join the club. The board agreed to this, and the committee working on an "alumni" program will be able to use the one-year fee waiver program for these alumni if they live in the Kirkland area.
The board discussed assembling a group of Rotarians to do hands-on work on the Cross Kirkland Corridor, socially distanced of course. See more information about this meeting and past board meetings by clicking on the link at the bottom of this issue of the Spokesman.
