Dr. Philip Ballinger is the University of Washington’s Special Adviser for the Presidential Scholars Initiative, and will introduce Rotarians to this new program to encourage teens to focus more on contributing to others and their communities as they prepare for college and the admissions process. The UW is seeking students who, often without recognition or accolades, significantly pursue forms of self-initiated service to those with whom they live, learn, worship, or work.Potential Presidential Scholars will be Washington resident high school students who already demonstrate exceptionally strong orientation toward, and commitment to, the welfare of others and their communities, whether those communities be towns, schools, neighborhoods, or families. These students will not apply for the program and its associated scholarship; rather the University seeks to identify them through active outreach to community leaders throughout the state.
