The Rotary Club of Kirkland held a meeting online on February 1, 2021.
Attending were James Nevers, Mike Hunter, John Woodbury, Rich Bergdahl, Bob Auslander, Kristin Olson, Margie Glenn, Dave DeBois, Joanne Primavera, Rick Walter, Amy and Dave Mutal, Gary Cohn, Brian Tucker, Don Dicks, Jim Feek, Rick Ostrander, John Pruitt, Monica Fratita, and Patti Smith.
President James Nevers called the Kirkland Rotary meeting to order at 6:15 p.m.
Dave Mutal led us in the Pledge of Allegiance.
Guests:
The club’s guests for the evening were Kathy Feek, spouse of Jim Feek; Justin Wang, an exchange student from Taiwan from 10 years ago; Jessica Laing, the club’s first Rotary Student of the Month for February; and Jeff Lockhart, the speaker.
Announcements:
Amy Mutal announced that we will have a Duck Dash in 2021! The plan is to coordinate with October Fest in late September and have the race in some form that weekend. Adoption tickets could be available soon and each member can sell the adoptions or donate the usual $500.
Gary Cohn said the Scholarship Program is close to a launch. We have $24,000 in scholarship money this year for 18 scholarships. If you can help with upcoming Zoom interviews, let Gary know.
Student of the Month:
Jessica Laing, a junior at Lake Washington High School, is a highly active student. She is a member of the ACLU Club and one of founders of the Black Student Union. Her emphasis is on helping people of color. She airs a segment every week on the Kang News to all staff and students. She hopes to attend the University of Washington and major in education.
We all wish her well and President James asked her to attend a Monday night meeting in the future when we are back at the Woodmark Hotel.
Program:
Jeff Lockhart, executive director of the Kirkland Performance Center, brought us up to date on the happenings at the theater during this time of COVID-19. KPC was the first theater to close in the nation due to the surprising cases of COVID-19 here in Kirkland.
Rather than sit back and do nothing, Jeff and his staff put together the ability to stream shows, and assist bands and non-profits with recordings and streaming to help them stay afloat.
All the KPC shows are on YouTube and are free thanks to grants and donations. Check out the KPC website to get started viewing!
