The Rotary Club of Kirkland held a meeting on June 6, 2022 at the Courtyard by Marriott hotel.
President Dave DeBois rang the bell at 6:20 p.m., calling the club meeting to order.
Patti Smith led the membership in the Pledge of Allegiance.
Attending were George Anderson, Pete Anderson, Bob Auslander, Scott Becker, Christine Bell, Gary Cohn, David DeBois, Jocelyn Ellison*, Doug Evanson, Rashmi Garimella, Margie Glenn, Mike Hunter, Jim Meniketti, Amy Mutal, Kristin Olson, Rick Ostrander, Steve Shinstrom, Patti Smith, and Brian Tucker. *Attended via Zoom.
Guests:
Guests this evening included Kiavash Maadanian, a guest of Steve Shinstrom and an applicant for membership in the club, and Daren Penry a local doctor who is interested in the club. Juanita and Lake Washington high school’s career specialists, Peggy Shay and Nichole Swanger, attended this evening in honor of tonight’s program, Scholarship Night. Our greeters this evening were Margie Glenn and Jim Meniketti, who were at the front desk to greet attendees and collect dinner fees.
Announcements & Club Business:
Scott Becker provided an update on Duck Dash ticket production; tickets printing is expected to be completed this week. Tickets are expected to be available for distribution to members next Monday, June 13.
President-elect Amy Mutal announced the 2022-2023 Rotary officers and other board members, indicating their names would be published in the Spokesman and the slate presented to the membership for a vote at the next meeting, Monday, June 13. A joint meeting of the new and existing board members is scheduled for Thursday, June 16.
President Dave reiterated that the City of Kirkland sent him appeal for volunteers for the June 12-14 event sponsored by the City of Kirkland. He also noted the following for Rotarians:
- The next board meeting, June 16, will be a combined meeting of 2021-2022 current board and the incoming 2022-2023 board.
- Rotarian Disaster Fund collections for Ukraine Relief are a huge success. A Zoom meeting with Ukraine Rotary resulted in a request from Ukraine Rotary to Rotary International that Russia’s Rotary Clubs be removed from membership in RI. No resolution to this request has been issued by RI.
- The July 25 Vital Solutions Golf Tournament will not interfere with Kirkland Rotary Duck Branding meeting. Duck Branding at Lee Johnson Chevrolet on NE 85th Street in Kirkland at 5:00 p.m.
Program:
The program this evening was Scholarship Night, and was attended by the following scholarship recipients and their guests: Monique Loos, Juanita High School scholarship recipient and her family members, Anthony Loos, her father, Katrina Loos, her mother, and Gavin Loos, her brother; Grace Lloyd, Juanita High School scholarship recipient and her family members, Doug Lloyd, her father, and Kristy Lloyd, her mother; Sydney Kraabel, Lake Washington High School scholarship recipient and her family members, Peter Kraabel, her father, Andrea Kraabel, her mother, and Lane Kraabel, her older brother; and Jacob Deleon, Juanita High School scholarship recipient and his family, Ann Deleon, his mother, and Gianna Deleon, his sister. Brandon Honcoop introduced Sydney, Patti Smith introduced Jacob, Kristin Olson introduced Grace, Mike Hunter introduced Monique, and Gary Cohn and Nichole Swanger introduced Drew Fialho who was unable to attend this evening. Each of the seniors received a $2,500 Rotary Scholarship, flowers, a copy of the Rotarian, and a racing duck. Each mother and each school staff member received flowers as well.
Joker Pool:
There was not a Joker Pool this evening.
