Student of the Month:  Jessica Lund from Lake Washington High School spoke before the group to express her appreciation and tell us more about herself.  Her parents, Laura and Adam were attending with Jessica tonight.      Jessica is an accomplished tennis and volleyball player, her volleyball team having 2 years at State competitions.  She is the captain of the team.  Her tennis team placed 3rd in the league for doubles.  She was the Honorable Mention Player.   Tutoring for 7th grader, Vanessa Valdez, has brought Jessica much personal satisfaction as well as being V.P. of the student Kiwanis Club.    She also sings and has competed in national competitions as part of a nationally acclaimed choir.  They have placed 1st in all categories.    Jessica has also been on the National Honor Society for 4 years.     Jessica has been accepted to 5 colleges, including Stanford and University of Washington.  She expressed a desire to live in a new place and meet new people.  (I think we’re losing her from the Northwest!)   When asked what may have surprised her the most about her experience with the Rotary Club, she replied that she was surprised to see how many people were involved.

PROGRAM: “Meet your Board”

Tonight Patty Sims, Jerry Campo, and Barbara Seaton were the Board members who shared personal things about their growing up and life now.

Patty Sims started and told us she had been a member for 7 years.  She moved here from Yakima when she married.  Her boss, Brad Green, sponsored her. She has been with Conover for 14 years.  Her involvement in the club has centered on Community Service and she has been the International Student Chair for 2 years. and participated with the Miracle League the last 4 years.  Patty shared her “love story” …..meeting her husband while still living in Yakima.  He was diagnosed with Hotchins (Stage 3) and required chemo treatments. The chemo was successful and he has been in remission for 7 years now.  They were married after his last chemo treatment.  They have a 2 year old boy, Aiden, and a 16 year old daughter, Lauren.  Patty ended with singing “Sing the Song of Washington” bringing up memories of college days at Washington State (Pullman).  Though most in the room are Husky fans, we all appreciated the song and her beautiful rendition of it!  Patty’s favorite thing about Rotary is “the people”.

Jerry Campo was next.  Jerry was born in Ontario, Oregon, but raised in Fruitland, Idaho.  Said the hospital was across the state line and that was the nearest one!  He grew up on the family farm, growing applies.  And, Jerry was the youngest of 4 and the only boy!  The family moved to Boise when Jerry was 7, where his dad went to work for Hughes Aircraft.  He attended Catholic school and played sports and rode bikes.  Loved baseball and math…thought they went “hand in hand”.    When Jerry’s dad moved the family to Seattle during Jerry’s senior year of high school, Jerry was not happy about the move; but, now thinks it was the right thing and has worked out great.  He went to the University of Washington and eventually fulfilled his dream of becoming a dentist.  Summers, Jerry worked in salmon canning factories in Alaska.  While there, he traveled a bit in the state and upon graduation travel to Eurpoe and spent 2 years in Switzerland.  He moved back to Seattle in 1988.  Jerry’s Rotary experience has been a long one and he was President in 1998-1999.  This last year, he has been Club Service Chair and enjoyed planning and working events.

Barbara Seaton was the last Board member to take the floor.  She has been a member of the club for 7 years and joined in order “to do more than write a check”. When she visited the Kirkland Rotary Club, she knew immediately she wanted to be a part of it.  She has held many positions, including Treasurer for the Foundation, and the International Yachting Fellowship of Rotarians.  She is involved with Reading Buddies and Miracle League as well as Northwest Harvest.  Barbara is active and an avid boater, skier, golfer, Husky fan, biker, and loves to walk.  She and husband, Tim, live in Ballard but the commute doesn’t damper her commitment!  Her sponsor was Sharon Caville and the favorite thing she likes about this club is “the people”.

JOKER POOL:  Rick announced there is around $2400 in the pool now.  There were 21 cards and Diana Lanspa drew from the cards and got the 4 of Hearts.  No winner tonight!

Meeting adjourned at 7:30 pm.
