President Scott Rethke called the March 31, 2014 Rotary Meeting to order at 6:32pm and graciously thanked the scribe, John Pruitt and the greeter, Dave Aubry for their service.  Jim Feek led the Pledge of Allegiance.
Guests included visiting Rotarians Dan Moody and Alice Smith, from the Leavenworth Rotary Club.  Casey Oiness was a returning guest.  Heidi Corry accompanied our speaker, Heidi Hawkins.  Manon Debuire, our student of the month from Lake Washington High School introduced her dad, Loren Debuire.
Announcements:
  • Terry Cole announced that he was now a married man and would be honeymooning in Scottsdale for the next several weeks!
  • Patty Sims announced the start of Miracle League.  The games will be on Saturdays from 9:30a to 11:30a on the following dates:  4/26, 5/03, 5/10, 5/17, 5/31 and 6/07.  Please contact Patty and sign up to participate!
  • Scott Becker gave a Duck Dash update announcing that he has secured $19,500 in sponsorship funds.  Help Scott reach the $25,000 sponsorship goal by referring potential sponsors to him!  He also announced that we will be trying to get the GIANT QUACKY for our Duck Dash…yes, the World’s Largest Yellow Rubber Duck that is 65 feet tall and weighs 1,100 pounds.
  • Anne Hamilton presented Ernie Norehad, Scott Becker and Jim Feek their Paul Harris Fellow recognition pins.  Ernie, Scott and Jim all have multiple Paul Harris Fellow recognitions.  The presentation of Paul Harris Fellow recognition pins is The Rotary Foundation's way of expressing its appreciation for a substantial contribution to its many programs.
  • Scott Rethke reminded us that the next Rotary meeting [April 7th] would be the NCAA Finals Watch Party.  The tip off is scheduled for 6:10pm.  Bring potential new members, family & friends to the event.   
 
Student of the Month Talk:  Manon Debuire gave her talk about her experience with Rotary and thanked Mike Hunter, Angela Marks, Jason Overleese and Anne Hamilton for making her feel welcome.  Manon moved from France when she was 10 years old and had no command of the English language.  She took about three months to learn English and proceeded to earn a 3.92 GPA at Lake Washington High School.  She is very active with school projects and has a very busy life.  Manon indicated that perhaps in the future she would also be a Rotarian.  Angela Marks presented Manon a Rotary Certificate of Achievement, a rubber duck and our heartfelt thanks.   
     
Program:  Jason Overleese introduced Heidi Hawkins who is an Owner/Area Director at N2 Publishing.  Ms. Hawkins started the West of Market, Kirkland Living Magazine seven months ago and is looking to expand to other neighborhoods.  The magazine is a monthly publication that is free to local residents and is funded by sponsors.  The magazine is a source for neighborhood events, promotes stories about local businesses, is a real estate resource and is designed to bring neighborhoods closer together.  
Joker Pool!  Rick Walter had the lucky ticket, but didn’t draw the Joker.  The Joker pool continues to grow!
Adjournment:    President Scott Rethke adjourned the meeting at 7:33pm.
