The Rotary Club of Kirkland held a meeting online on May 24, 2021.
Attending were James Nevers, Dave Aubry, Joanne Primavera, Mike Hunter, John Woodbery, Brandon Honcoop, George Anderson, Rich Bergdahl, Gary Cohn, Patti Smith, Bob Auslander, John Pruitt, Margie Glenn, Dwight Olson, and Scott Becker.
President James Nevers rang the bell at 6:15 p.m.
Mike Hunter recited the Pledge.
Gary Cohn introduced the Scholarship Night program and recognized the winning students and their parents/guardians. He thanked the interview teams, club fund-raiser volunteers, especially retired Head Duck Patti Smith, President James Nevers, current Head Duck Amy Mutal, and President-Elect Dave DeBois.
He also thanked the various Club donors who generously added money to the Club Scholarship Fund. In addition, he thanked the various school contacts who facilitated the interview process. He next invited the school interview team leads to recognize the 16 awardees listed below, most of whom were present.
Mike Hunter and Patti Smith introduced an impressive group of students from Juanita High School. Equally impressive was the group from Lake Washington High School introduced by both Brandon Honcoop and James Nevers.
Alysen Laasko, from the Lake Washington Institute of Technology, introduced scholarship winner Zainab Al Zoubaidi from LWIT. Gary Cohn honored Karla Pastrana, a prior year Step Scholarship recipient, who received the second year Step award and is now attending the University of Washington|Tacoma.
In addition to all these students’ academic achievements, volunteer and sports activities, several of them are immigrants or children of immigrants. This is the full list of awardees, their schools, and the awards they received:

Following the awarding of scholarships, Gary Cohn thanked everyone for assistance and contributions, including past and future scholarship team members.
Presidents James thanked Gary Cohn and all the team leads for their work on the scholarship process.
James reminded attendees that there is no meeting next week due to the Memorial Day holiday. Our next meeting will be a combination of on-line with Zoom and in-person at the Woodmark Hotel, June 7.
