Minutes of Rotary Meeting 11/21/11

The November 21, 2011 Kirkland Rotary meeting was called to order by President Brandon Honcoop at 6:32.  Greeter was Eric Olsen.  The Pledge of Allegiance was lead by Brian Tucker.

The Inspirational Moment was offered by Dr. Ernie Norehead.  His theme was ‘What’s so special about America’.  He reminded us of our country’s accomplishments and contributions.

Visiting Rotarians were:

Scott East, family law, from the Bellevue Tuesday noon club, introduced by Bill Taylor.

Sarah Taylor, investments, from the Kirkland morning club, introduced by Rick Ostrander.

Guests were Joe Castleberry, President of Northwest University, and his wife Kathleen, introduced by D.V. Hurst, Jaymette[?], from Microsoft, and Cynthia Fitzgerald, introduced by Joanne Primavera.

Recent member Sue Greenfeld talked about how to do ‘makeup electronic’ meetings online.   See www.rotaryeclubone.org/ for details.  All that is required is that one read articles or watches videos on the site for at least 30 minutes.  Use of this feature by members who have occasion to miss a meeting would greatly assist in improving our club’s attendance record.

  • Jerry Campo reminded everyone of the upcoming Club Christmas party at Lucia’s in Park Place December 4 at 6PM.  The cost is a very reasonable $50 per person; 46 people are signed up and there is space for another 34.

  • Elizabeth Rusnak reminded everyone that materials for Thanksgiving food baskets are being collected tonight.

  • Brian Tucker solicited help for interviewing exchange student candidates next week.

  • Steve Shinstrom circulated sign-up sheets for Scribe and Greeter – he would like to have the current year filled out especially.

  • Pat Dye reminded everyone of GG Getz’s going away party at the Crab Cracker November 30 from 6-8PM.

  • Pat Dye introduced our Student of the Month, Christina K., from Juanita High School.

  • Dan Bartel informed everyone that one can purchase Gift Cards for various stores through Rotary First Harvest; this will result in a food contribution being made to First Harvest.

  • Don Dicks reminded everyone to sign up for Rotary International; the club will match in points all donations of $100 or more made during November.

It was another great night for Kirkland Rotary as Rich Bergdahl inducted two more members.  They were:  Joseph Castleberry, President of Northwest University, sponsored by D.V. Hurst and mentored by David Aubry.

Cynthia Fitzgerald, PhD, Dean of LIOS Graduate College at Saybrook University, sponsored by Joanne Primavera, mentored by Rick Ostrander.

Chuck Brockway solicited more sign-ups for the Apple Cup pool between two losing teams, whose names escape me.

Our program speaker was Bernice Tannenbaum who, in her spare time as a wildlife biologist, works with a local non-profit, Bats Northwest.    She showed some fascinating slides of various types of bats, mostly northwest natves, and reminded everyone of all the beneficial contributions bats meake by eating insects and pollinating flowers.

Rick Walter had the lucky number, but the Joker remains inviolate.

Brandon adjourned the meeting at 7:55PM

Respectfully submitted,

David Aubry, Acting Scribe
