August 23, 2021 Spokesman
The Rotary Club of Kirkland held a meeting at The Woodmark Hotel on August 23, 2021. Rotarians attended in person; while online attendance was paused for the summer, it was resumed for this meeting and will be maintained for future meetings. This is necessary in response to The Woodmark’s decision to cancel catering service on Sundays, Mondays, and Tuesdays in response to the rise in Delta variant infections and the impact on The Woodmark staff.

President Dave DeBois rang the bell at 6:15 p.m., calling the club meeting to order.

Allan Hoviland led the membership in the Pledge of Allegiance.

Attending were George Anderson, Bob Auslander, Rich Bergdahl, Bella Chaffey, Gary Cohn, Terry Cole, Dave DeBois, Monica Fratita, Allan Hoviland, Mike Hunter, James Meniketti, James Nevers, Ernie Norehad, Rick Ostrander, Joanne Primavera, John Pruitt, Patti Smith, Bill Taylor, Alice Volpe, Rick Walter, and John Woodbery.

Guests:

President Dave called on tables to introduce guests. Terry Cole introduced his wife, Michelle. Rich Bergdahl introduced his wife, Nanette. John Woodbery introduced his wife, Dee. Bella Chaffe introduced her husband, Nicholas. Mike Hunter introduced his wife, Sharon. Bill Taylor introduced his wife, Sandy. James Nevers introduced his wife, Jessica. Woodmark Discontinues Monday Service
President Dave DeBois announced on Monday night, August 23, that due to business volume and staffing concerns caused by the pandemic, The Woodmark Hotel catering group will cease service on Sundays, Mondays, and Tuesdays. As much as The Woodmark's management reassured President Dave that the hotel would prefer retain the Rotary meetings and service the membership, the club will not be able to meet in-person at The Woodmark for the foreseeable future. Discussions are underway regarding the potential for other venues and changing the club’s meeting night. President Dave will announce the meeting plan as soon as an alternative is found. In the meantime, club members should be prepared to return to virtual meetings via the Zoom platform. The Zoom meeting information has be replaced on the club's homepage to accommodate virtual meetings as needed.

September Series Reminder
As September rings in the start of the school year, and Rotarians learn from local experts what's new in the schoolhouse. On September 13, Principal Christine Bell, who leads Lake Washington High School serving approximately 1,800 full-time students, will brief Rotarians on highlights of the new school year, note several student and staff accomplishments, review the new facility opening this fall, and describe how the Kangaroo team' design for instructional and support operations after more than a year of remote learning. On September 27, Dr. Matthew Colpitts, president of Ventures Academy, will introduce Rotarians to the Academy and discuss how the school was established, and how it helps students to envision and build products, market and sell them, serve their customers, and exercise corporate citizenship. The students' ventures are real businesses that they own and manage for the duration of their studies and beyond.
