The Rotary Club of Kirkland held a virtual meeting via Zoom on May 13, 2024.
President Gary Cohn called the meeting to order at 6:15 p.m.
President Gary led us in the pledge. Jocelyn Ellison recited the Four-Way Test.

Our guest this evening was Mannasey (Manny) Tetteh, a Rotarian from Gana and then England, who moved to Kirkland and is working as a nurse at EvergreenHealth. This is Manny’s second meeting as a candidate for membership in the club.

Our online guest this evening was our speaker, Nan Su, a news commentator for SOH International Chinese Radio Network and NTD International TV network. Mr. Su and his wife of more than 30 years and their two daughters reside in San Jose, California.
Announcements:
President Gary shared several announcements. He announced that we have a new Rotarian as of today, Nancy Khoury, who is our first “corporate-secondary” member with Banner Bank, bringing the club’s membership to 42 (37 Active + 1 Honorary + 1 Active - Corporate Primary + 1 Active - Corporate Secondary + 2 Active - Spouse/Partner). Nancy and Chris Kelly-Storbeck are scheduled to be inducted at the May 20 meeting.
Four Lake Washington School District staff members will be honored by the Rotary Club of Kirkland as Outstanding Educators for 2024. Marion Mays, a special education teacher, is the Rose Hill Middle School awardee this year. Cameron Stedman is the Kirkland Middle School awardee, and leads the school's band program. Sherri Pflager is Kamiakin Middle School's awardee, and is also a special education teacher. Finally, Chef Mary Clarke is the awardee from Lake Washington High School, and leads the school's culinary arts program and serves as Career & Technical Education Department chair for the high School. U.S. Representative Suzan DelBene will address the club membership on the occasion of the club's Outstanding Educator Award Dinner & Ceremony. Congresswoman Suzan DelBene represents Washington’s 1st Congressional District, which includes parts of King and Snohomish Counties. First sworn into the House of Representatives in November 2012, Suzan brings a unique voice to the nation’s capital with more than two decades of experience as a successful technology entrepreneur and business leader.
Rep. DelBene takes on a wide range of challenges both in Congress and in the 1st District. She is a leader on issues of technology, health care, trade, taxes, and environmental conservation, and is a champion for working families. She serves on the House Ways and Means Committee, which is at the forefront of creating a more equitable tax code, health care reform, trade deals, and lasting retirement security. She serves on the Select Revenue Measures and Trade Subcommittees.
District 5030 Governor Kaj Pedersen announced that the former Seahawk player and community leader Doug Baldwin, Jr. will be the keynote speaker at the District 5030 Celebration on the 24th of June! This will spur clubs and individual Rotarians to be a part of what will be a memorable District 5030 Celebration at the end of this Rotary year. Doug Baldwin is known for his amazing skills on the football field, for being a part of a Super Bowl championship team, and for remaining an active member of our community and spearheaded the development of the Family First Community Center in Renton, a project that the Rotary Club of Renton has been a partner in supporting. Doug is a leading voice for change in his community through service and represents a strong partner with Rotary in his belief of Service above Self!

Based on information from Rotary International and District 5030, the Rotary Club of Kirkland Board of Directors has set the annual dues amount for 2024-2025. Rotarians' dues statements for 2024-2025 will be published on June 1, 2023, and are due by June 30, 2023.
Increases were driven entirely by a rise in the Rotary International dues, an increase in the annual subscription to The Rotarian magazine last January, and a District 5030 increase approved by the presidents-elect on May 6. The RI increase is $5.00, and the district increase is $4.00, and the magazine subscription increase is $6.00. Last year, the board committed to keep the local club dues level for three years, barring unforeseen emergencies. This is the second year of that commitment.
