Rotary Club of Kirkland scholarship recipient Drew Fialho reports he has garnered enough funding to support fully his trip to Washington, D.C. He provides club members the following update on his funding efforts.
Thank you again for sponsoring my trip to the Washington Journalism and Media Conference! Since I last spoke with you, I’ve raised another $855 through my GoFundMe page. I’m fully funded by combining that amount with your generous donation and some of my family’s savings! I leave for Washington, D.C. on July 10, and return on the 15th. On this trip, I will have the opportunity to attend speeches by industry leaders and be challenged to work with my peers through simulations and group discussions.
Teresa Glidden, the outreach and education coordinator for the Corporations and Charities Division of Washington’s Secretary of State, works closely with Consumer Protection Washington, a consortium of state and federal agencies, as well as the Better Business Bureau, all of whom are dedicated to educating and alerting the public on consumer issues, scams and investigations in Washington State.
Last December Rotarians gathered at the Kirkland Woman's Club to wrap holiday gifts for needy families in the Kirkland area. Club members raised over $10,000 for families identified by staff at John Muir Elementary School. Take a few moments to enjoy the photos from the annual Rotary event; simply click on the photo above right to bring up the holiday slide show. Many thanks to the Rotarians who donated photos to commemorate the event.
Rotarians' dues statement for the new Rotary year should be published no later than July 1, and are due by July 31. President Dave DeBois announced the dues increase during the May 23 regular club meeting. There are two adjustments in dues amounts driven primarily by meal cost and meeting attendance levels, as well as an additional international charge for insurance. The format and how Rotarians will be able to pay online remains the same as last year. Dues statements will be produced by the ClubRunner system and sent to members in an email, similar to how Rotarians receive meeting announcements and the club's bulletin, the Spokesman.
The club’s board of directors met on Thursday, May 19, using the Zoom platform. Highlights included discussion of a budget draft for th 2022-2023 Rotary year, approval of dues for the coming year, increasing the amount of scholarship awards, approval of membership additions and changes, and development of the 2022-2023 board. The treasurer’s report was provided in written form, including updates on revenue, expenses, and a proposal to begin drawing down charitable funds through increased donations now that the pandemic has receded somewhat, and fund raising and community service are expected to return to pre-pandemic levels. Discussion of funding priorities is scheduled for an upcoming club assembly this summer.
