Sparrow Menu for August 5
Rotarians will gather at the Sparrow Kirkland restaurant in the Juanita Bay area for their regular meeting on Monday, August 5, 2024. The restaurant is located in the space previously occupied by the Juanita Pub at 9736 NE 120th Place in Kirkland. Rotarians and guests will be treated to a prix fixe menu developed by the restaurant for this occasion. Members and potential guests may view the menu by clicking HERE. For this meeting, the dinner fee of $55 will be paid to the club at the restaurant and the menu selection (an appetizer, a main course, a dessert) will be placed. The club will in turn provide the restaurant a single payment at the conclusion of the evening. The restaurant features an impressive bar, and attendees may purchase beverages individually at the time of the meeting. There is no pre-registration for this dinner. The restaurant has reserved a meeting space that accommodates 22 diners, and requires a $600 minimum food expense for the event. Overflow seating will be available in the general dining room area adjacent to or nearby the reserved space.
Scholarship Spotlight: Brandon Goodfried
As Brandon reflects on his journey at Lake Washington High School, he says he is filled with gratitude for the myriad opportunities he has had to lead and serve his community. From serving as a senior class officer to spearheading the high school’s student broadcast, he has learned valuable lessons in teamwork, perseverance, and the power of community.  As Brandon pursues a degree in business with a focus on operations, he is eager to apply the skills and knowledge he’s gained to effect positive change within the non-profit sector. He believes that we all have a duty to give back to our communities and to work toward a better future for all. With the support of Rotary scholarships, Brandon notes he is closer to achieving his goals and making a meaningful impact in the world. Brandon is the recipient of a $3,000 Kirkland Rotary Scholarship and a $1,000 Rotary Business & Accounting Scholarship. The latter is sponsored by Rick Walter and Hutchinson & Walter CPAs.
Registration Open for 2024 Salmon Bake
Registration is now open for the 2024 Rotary Salmon Bake. Just click on the bold, blue type or go to the club's Calendar of events. As usual, invitations will go out to club members from ClubRunner as well. Once again this year, the salmon bake will be held at the Auslander Home on Yarrow Point. The reviews from last year's event were again positive, so The Catering Company has been engaged for the event again this year. The menu will be repeated this year, and the cost has been set at $40. Similar to last year, Rotarians are invited to bring side dishes and refreshments. Please coordinate those items through this year's club services chair, Doug Evanson. Registration for the dinner is through the ClubRunner events system, and the deadline for the catering count is noon on August 21, 2024. Due to overwhelming popularity, the frozen margarita bar, courtesy of our host and immediate past president, will be offered again this year while supplies last. In addition, a selection of other cocktails as well as beer and wine will be available.

Bunco Host Needed for 2025
For the past several years, the Rotary Club of Kirkland's Annual Bunco Night has been graciously hosted at the home of Steve and Patty Shinstrom, typically around the month of April. With Steve's retirement from the club, we will need to identify a new host and venue for the event. It is typically held in a member's home on a Saturday in the evening. There is no cost to attend; members just come and have fun. Rotary members contribute heavy appetizers, often refreshments. If you are interested in hosting the event this Rotary year, please contact Rick Walter to coordinate the making of plans!
Club Dues Payment Update 2024-2025
Rotaryy dues statements were sent to active members on June 1, 2024, and were due by June 30, 2024. Reminder statements were mailed on June 15, 25, and 29 to all Rotarians with outstanding accounts. On June 30, board members elected to extend the due date for individuals who needed a little additional time to pay the $415. As of July 15, 85% of continuing club members had fully paid their dues, and five accounts had outstanding balances. Dues may be paid by credit card or debit card using the online Dues & Billing System link in the June 1 invoice, or using the link in the reminder statements, or by logging into your account on the website. Members may also pay by check through the U.S. Mail.
Club's Amended Bylaws Posted
In June, the club's board of directors unanimously approved a proposed revision to Article 4 of the club's Bylaws, Duties of Officers, and elected to send the proposed revision to the membership via an online voting system. As of the election date of June 24, 2024, all 21 members voting had voted to approve. An updated version of the Bylaws, found in the Documents section of the website, may be accessed by clicking on the image in this story.
July 2024 Board Meeting Highlights
Several members of the club’s board of directors met on Thursday, July 18, 2024 at the Brezza Condominium in downtown Kirkland. There were not enough voting directors present and online to establish a quorum, so those assembled discussed the agenda items and individual officers made decisions within their responsibility areas. Highlights included briefings on account balances, status of outstanding club dues payments, status of rummage sale sponsorship collections, status of venue research, consensus on a response to an invitation to contribute to development of Fisk Park, and reports from various officers, committee chairs, and the foundation liaison.
