Rotary Moment:

Daniel Sada-Caraveo gave us a Rotary Moment centering on how keeping a copy of the Rotary magazine available and visible in his home often results in people who are guests in his home wanting to know more about and becoming interested in joining Rotary.

Announcements:

Ms. Koslosky announced that because the Eagles Club will not be available March 17, that meeting will not occur.  She thanked the various members who assisted with the meeting last week – setting up the AV system, selling raffle tix, etc.

Kathy Feek, wife of club member and past president Jim Feek, was one of the people on the cover of the March edition of Greet Kirkland magazine.

Rotary Student of the Month:

Angela Pritchett introduced our Rotary Student of the Month for March and used an interview format to elicit information about Madeleine Garrison’s impressive scholastic and personal activities and accomplishments. Madeleine helped lead her school's varsity gymnastics team to the state championship, and she has competed on the national level in speech and debate. She is also a successful competitive jump roper, having won multiple national titles and competed in the Junior World Championships.  She is gaining college credits by participating in the Running Start program.

Her favorite causes are organizations centered around providing people with the basic necessities of life.  She has learned to lead and to mentor others.

Program:

Jocelyn Reiter introduced our speaker, Dr. Lewelyn Packia Raj of Overlake Medical Center, who presented a program to Rotarians on being a Masters Athlete. Dr. Packia Raj practices in the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Clinics at Overlake Medical Center and earns high praise from some of our very own Rotarians.

He gave a very informative talk about the effect of aging on the human body, and how we can counter some of these effects through diet and exercise.  He discussed foods to avoid, as well as foods that can help us counter the effects of aging on our bodies and our metabolism.  He showed us examples of people who compete athletically at a very high level into their 80s and beyond.

Normal aging can result in our muscles slowly turning to fat, our hearts becoming brittle, our heart rate declines, and we lose muscle strength.  After exercising, our muscles recover more slowly.  A good diet and exercise program can help offset some of these changes.  Varying our exercises from aerobic to resistance can be of great benefit in staying fit.  AND, when walking, be sure to have your feet contact the ground from heel to toe, in that order.  This will help to maintain our ability to balance.  Daily activity is very important – frequent, short exercise is better than long exercise periods with big gaps between periods of activity. Socialization is also critical to enjoying life.  Find enjoyment in all things we do, including exercise and personal interaction.
YouTube has tailored-by-age video programs.  One can also consult with a trainer to create a tailor-made exercise regimen.

More Announcements:
