The Rotary Club of Kirkland held a meeting on August 29, 2022 at the Courtyard by Marriott hotel.
President Amy Mutal rang the bell at 6:23 p.m., calling the club meeting to order.
Mike Hunter led the membership in the Pledge of Allegiance.
Attending were Pete Anderson, David Aubry, Bob Auslander, Gary Cohn, Terry Cole, Margie Glenn, Michael Hunter, Isabelle Kalisa, Jim Meniketti, Amy Mutal, Kristin Olson, Rick Ostrander, Joanne Primavera, John Pruitt, and John Storbeck. (There were no Zoom attendees due to computer difficulties.)
Guests:
Mike Hunter introduced one guest this evening, Lake Washington High School Career Specialist Nichole Swanger, who is also interested in applying for membership. Terry Cole introduced our speaker’s mother, Ali Fialho, and our speaker and scholarship recipient, Drew Fialho.

Our greeters this evening were Margie Glenn and Jim Meniketti, who were at the front desk to greet members and collect dinner fees.

The 2022-2023 Student of the Month program launches in September with the posting of this year's instructions and application. Students from Emerson, Juanita, and Lake Washington high schools are eligible to apply for the Rotary honor. The vocational service committee members, high school principals, and high school contacts were provided this year's application and interview questions for review, and the interview teams are expected to begin interviewing students near the end of September or beginning of October. Attain Housing's Eric Sanford and President Amy Mutal invite Kirkland Rotarians to gather for the Attain Housing Fall Luncheon, "Home is Where the Heart is", on Thursday, September 22, at Overlake Christian Church in Redmond. The doors will open at 11:30 a.m., and the program will conclude at 1 p.m. The Fall Luncheon raises funds to benefit homeless and at-risk families across east King County. The program will feature an update on Attain’s transitional housing and rental assistance programs, volunteer award presentations, and more, and guests will be joined again by host and emcee, Sasha Summer Cousineau. 
October 2021 Rotary "Space" series program presenter Emma Lehnhardt, who described the Artemis project to club members, sends greetings and a wonderful photo of the now-delayed rocket awaiting launch. Rotarians have likely read about NASA delaying the launch, and Emma writes, "Unfortunately the first attempt was scrubbed, but we’re headed back ... for the Saturday (and potentially Monday) launch windows. We were able to get out to the pad last Sunday before they locked down everything for fueling." Emma and husband Chris are pictured at the launch site.
Rotary dues payments were due by Sunday, July 31, 2022. As of August 29, 81% of 36 active club members have paid dues; seven members' accounts remain outstanding. Another set of statements was sent last weekend, and a reminder set will be sent on August 31 to club members with outstanding balances. Dues may be paid using the online Dues & Billing System links in the statements emailed on July 1 and 15. The link is embedded in the bold words "
The club’s board of directors met on Thursday, August 25, at President Amy Mutal's office. Highlights included extensive discussion of the treasurer's proposed budget for the 2022-2023 Rotary year, and detailed budget requests presented by the chairs (or a committee representative) of the international service, community service, and vocational service committees. The international service budget request was approved. The community service and vocational service (including the student of the month and scholarship programs) were continued for further discussion and action at the September board meeting. All committee proposals were crafted to invest both last year's Duck Dash proceeds, and a portion of the unspent proceeds from prior years' fund raising efforts. The
