The Rotary Club of Kirkland Student of the Month program continues in March with a student of the month from Lake Washington High School. Lizzie Densmore will meet club members on Monday, March 14. With a passion for biological sciences, Lizzie has spent her scholastic career exploring these subjects inside and outside classrooms. Lizzie participated in a program where she derived stem cells from a skin biopsy within a lab, and differentiated them into cardiomyocytes and tested chemicals on breast cancer cells. Lizzie learned much about working in a lab, as well as the field in general with her mentor's guidance. She also participates in school leadership, utilizing her role to help others as sophomore class secretary and junior class vice president.
During the past two months, approximately 64% of the 42 active club members read the Rotary Club of Kirkland's weekly bulletin, the Spokesman. Readership of the Spokesman has been rising over the past several months. Each edition of the Spokesman is sent via email to all club members with valid email addresses. The Spokesman is also sent to all past Rotarians with valid emails. as well as bulletin subscribers, friends, and the past few years of scholarship recipients. Soon past students of the month will be added to the mailings as well. ClubRunner tracks the number of recipients who "read" the Spokesman, which means those who have opened each edition in their email accounts.

During its most recent meeting, the club's board of directors reviewed badge options for club members and confirmed the selection of rectangular, blue, six-line badges (see five-line image here) to replace the aging round badges used in past years. The board also reviewed existing and proposed classifications for our Rotarians, which are to be assigned at acceptance into the club's membership. In some cases, one of the membership committee members will a contact club member directly to verify the classification to be included in the badge if the member is new or club records are incomplete. Badges are expected to arrive in several weeks from the Russel Hampton Company.
