Outstanding Educator Nominated
This coming Monday, May 15 the Outstanding Educator for 2023 nominated by Lake Washington High School will be honored by the club. Mr. Carl J. "C.J." Green teaches Career & Technical Education courses, in particular business and marketing, at LWHS and is the school's Black Student Union Advisor. He co-leads the Racial Equity Team and is a strong advocate for, and coach of, the school's DECA chapter. Mr. Green also coaches football for the Kangaroos.

In addition to his leadership in these areas, writes Principal Christine Bell, what stands out about Mr. Green is his thoughtful and reflective nature. He listens carefully, particularly to students, and is a leader on our staff. You might find him supervising concessions so that his clubs can earn funds for trips, managing the student store, or teaching students how to plan for and run their own businesses. Meet this wonderful educator and his administrators on Monday, May 15, when the club holds its annual recognition ceremony for outstanding educators.
Board Nominations Action May 15
Our Rotary Club of Kirkland Board Nominating Committee, appointed by the club president, has concluded its work for this year. The Nominating Committee of John Pruitt (past-president), Pete Anderson (vice president), and Gary Cohn (president-elect) proposed the list of Rotarians for the officer and Avenue of Service Committee chair cadre for 2023-2024. Approval was granted during the special board meeting on Wednesday night in anticipation of club action during the in-person meeting on May 15.

On May 15, club members will be provided a ballot with the slate of officers and directors, there will be nominations from the floor, and the membership will be asked to vote on the nominees. Three offices are advanced automatically; once a Rotarian is elected vice president, he or she automatically advances to president-elect, then president, and then immediate past president according to the club's bylaws.

Rotary's Four-Way Test
Committee Commitments Survey
Rotarians should be on the look-out for a committee commitments survey in the next several days. In order to prepare well for the coming Rotary year, each Rotarian will be sent a simple SurveyMonkey questionnaire asking that you select two committees on which to serve in 2023-2024.

The major options are the Rotary Avenues of Service committees: community service, club service, international service, youth service, and vocational service. In addition, there are other committees such as membership and programs and speakers through which to contribute your time and talent for the betterment of the club. These standing committees are separate from the rummage sale teams to which we've assigned ourselves for this season. Please respond to the survey so that the club's volunteer structure is established before the new year is upon us.
Programs & Events Survey
In addition to a committee commitments survey, club members will receive soon a survey asking for preferences as to program topics and speakers for the coming Rotary year. It will also ask for preferences regarding club events to be scheduled in 2023-2024.

In two recent surveys, club members leaned toward one club event per quarter. Given the popularity of the holiday party (and its linkage to holiday gift giving), the salmon bake, and Bunko, our club service team has about one more event to select and schedule. It will be particularly important that you weigh in as to how you'd prefer spend your event time with fellow Rotarians, and possibly others in our community. Because this survey will be based on a review of nearly ten years of Rotary events, there may be a fair number of choices from which to select your preferences. Please take time to provide your viewpoint so that the club service team can operate from a better base of knowledge of club members' preferences.
May Special Board Meeting Highlights
The club’s board of directors held a special meeting the evening of Wednesday, May 3, 2023, via Zoom. The limited purpose special meeting was held to consider the report of the board's nominating committee, and approve the recommended slate of officers and Avenues of Service committee heads. The board also considered several options for returning to QuickBooks for club budgeting and accounting, and approved a proposal to purchase an annual license for the Plus version that provides budgeting, accounting, and comparative reporting. The board meeting schedule is published in the club's Calendar. Rotarians may view board meeting minutes from this special meeting and the April regular meeting later this month on the Board Minutes page, which requires a log-in. A link also may be found at the bottom of The Spokesman.
