Get Ready for the Baby Shower!
Get ready for the baby shower during the August 23 Rotary Club of Kirkland meeting! Rotarian Patti Smith has organized the once-in-a-lifetime event to honor and recognize the club's immediate past president, James Nevers, and his wife and soon-to-be-delivered baby boy. While gifts or donations are completely voluntary, in the spirit of generosity that marks the Rotary Club of Kirkland as exceptional, Rotarians are coming up with a broad array of surprises for the Nevers. Any Rotarian who wishes to reserve a gift or guess the delivery particulars should contact Patti Smith as soon as possible, irrespective of plans to attend. Rotarians planning to attend also should inform Patti Smith as soon as possible in order for dinner arrangements to be made well. Thank you to Patti for leading this exciting program, and thanks to Alice Volpe for once again stepping forward to lead the decoration assembly.

August Board Meeting Highlights
The club’s board of directors met on Thursday, August 19, at RE/MAX Northwest courtesy of Rotarian Rich Bergdahl. Highlights include a lengthy discussion of the attitudes toward and responsibilities of protecting both vaccinated and unvaccinated Rotarians and guests, and a board decision to return to masking for all attendees, except when eating, and a smaller number of diners at each table in order to increase again social distancing. There was a discussion about the number of Duck Dash tickets being sold and the number of club members who are selling them; the nature and quality of the food and meal options at the meetings at The Woodmark Hotel; the possibility of returning to Zoom meetings during the winter if the pandemic does not subside; outreach to members to ensure no one is dropped for nonpayment of dues without warning; the community service and club service events planned for this year, and plans for streamlining club membership applications during the coming months.

The treasurer’s report included news of paying the remaining commitment to the city for the pavilion project, transitioning to debit cards for expenses, adding another Square account to facilitate collecting funds at the meetings, and that just over 47% of the Duck Dash sponsorships have been paid. The board discussed the new member process, decided to revisit the number of steps and length of time to complete the process, and recommended a candidate for membership to the club general membership.

In addition, the board heard about various speaker series plans for the next few months. The board meeting schedule is published in the club calendar, including physical meeting location and a Zoom link for those who want to attend virtually. Rotarians may view this month’s board meeting minutes and those of prior meetings on the Board Minutes page, which requires a log-in. A link also may be found at the bottom of the Spokesman.
