The Rotary Club of Kirkland held an in-person meeting August 19, 2024 at the Kirkland Eagles Club. Past President John Pruitt presided at this meeting and called the meeting to order at 6:17 p.m.
Bob Auslander led us in the Pledge, and Dave Aubry led the recitation of the Four-Way Test.
Rick Walter gave us a Rotary Moment in which he explained the origin of the Four -Way Test. It began as the result of a struggling company during the Depression searching for a way to differentiate itself from the competition. The company succeeded, in 1943 Rotary adopted the Four -Way Test, and eventually the company CEO became president of Rotary International.

Visiting Rotarians:
The club welcomed Dick Carlson, a ‘Sun-Bird’ with the Catalina Rotary Club in Tucson, Arizona who is with us through September.
Registration is open until noon tomorrow for the 2024 Rotary Salmon Bake. Register using the invitation sent to past, present, and prospective club members this week, or click on the bold, blue type above, or go to the club's Club Calendar of events. Again this year the salmon bake is to be held at the Auslander Home on Yarrow Point. The Catering Company has been engaged for the event and the menu will be repeated this year. Similar to last year, Rotarians are invited to bring side dishes. Please coordinate those items through this year's club services chair, Doug Evanson. Due to overwhelming popularity, the frozen margarita bar, courtesy of our host and our immediate past president, will be offered again this year while supplies last. In addition, a selection of other cocktails, beer, and wine will be available.
Lexi Storey says her dream has always been to become a part of the medical field and give back to the community by saving lives. She continues to show that she is resilient and hard working throughout many years of challenges. Lexi loves helping others and giving back to a community that has grown to shape her to be who she is today. She is more than excited to continue her education and maintain residency in Washington and in the Kirkland area for the rest of her life. Lexi counts many different accomplishments that exemplify the drive she has maintained throughout her education. She is proud of how far she has come, and some day will love to tell her story and have it inspire others around her. Lexis’s future plans are to continue her love for service in every community that she becomes a part of, and to end up with a family that she raises in Kirkland. Lexi is the recipient of a $3,000 Kirkland Rotary Scholarship.
During the year past presidents are stepping up to preside at meetings while our president is away from club activities. Thank you to those all of the past presidents who've volunteered to lead meetings during the year. There are several other roles that are necessary for smooth conduct of our meetings, whether in-person or virtual. Please sign up for several "open" meeting responsibilities for this year.Our club needs your contribution to make the meetings effective and enjoyable for all of our membership. During the past week, club members were sent two short SurveyMonkey questionnaires. One asked your preference for continuing or replacing the club's major fundraising effort, the Great Kirkland Rotary Rummage Sale; 62.5% of those responding preferred to continue the rummage sale project. The other asked for your choice regarding the best venue for the club to use for regular meetings, and to select from among the three venues at which we've met for trials; 71.4% of those responding indicated a preference for the Eagles. Youth Service is Rotary’s Fifth Avenue of Service and an essential element of Rotary for many of us. One of the ways we support Youth Service is through Youth Protection. In compliance with Rotary International, District 5030 has developed a Youth Protection Policy and every club in our district is required to adopt the district policy. Each year, the district also makes our membership in general aware of the policy and of the need to focus on protecting youth in our community. The Rotary Club of Kirkland Board of Directors has again this year adopted the Rotary District 5030 Youth Protection Policy 2024-2025, which may be viewed by clicking on the bolded name in this article.
The club’s board of directors met on Thursday evening, August 15, 2024 at the Brezza Condominium in downtown Kirkland. Highlights included discussion about the status of outstanding club dues payments, status of rummage sale revenue and expenses, status of venue research, approval of the new youth protection policy, changes in board positions, and reports from various officers and committee chairs.
