Membership Dues Update
As of August 13, 15 of the club’s 53 active members, or 28%, have not yet paid their annual dues.  Club members may pay using the new online Dues & Billing System link in their emailed statements, which requires a credit or debit card (remember, Herb Weisbaum recommends using only credit cards for your financial security), or by check through the U.S. Mail.  For those Rotarians who’ve announced Happy Bucks contributions at a meeting, payments may be made through the Donations page, or the contribution may be made through the Dues & Billing System after a statement is sent a few days after the meeting during which the Happy Bucks were announced.
August Program Series Underway
The all-star line-up for the August diversity, equity, and inclusion program series, The Legacy of Racism in America, kicked off at the last meeting.  See Dave Aubry’s Spokesman notes summarizing Scott Miller’s presentation on white privilege, which held members in deep conversation until nearly 7:45 that evening.  Rotarians can look forward to Joshua Cooper, PriceWaterhouseCoopers vice president, presenting on LGBTQD equity and inclusion on August 17; Paula-Ann Clements on the Native American experience on August 24; and former KING 5 television investigative reporter Linda Byron on August 31 discussing equity in policing and what it means to “defund” the police.  Thanks to Rotarian Darcia Tudor for organizing and facilitating the August series.  Rotarians can find topic and speaker background on the Rotary Club of Kirkland website using the Speakers tab.
September Program Series Confirmed
Back-to-school plans are lacing news reports of late, and peppering social media platforms as parents, students, and teachers express their preferences and concerns about resuming classes in the COVID environment.  As of this edition of the Spokesman, three local education leaders are committed for September.  On September 14, the club’s special guest will be the interim president of Bellevue College, former governor and former ambassador to China, Gary Locke.  On September 21, the special guest will be Dr. Jon Holmen, superintendent of the Lake Washington School District.  On the 28th, the club’s special guest will be Dr. Amy Morrison, president of the Lake Washington Institute of Technology.  All of these education CEOs will discuss news and plans in their organizations, and touch on how their teams of professionals are dealing with the impact of the novel coronavirus.  Rotarians can find topic and speaker background on the Rotary Club of Kirkland website using the Speakers tab.
Board of Directors Meeting Highlight
The club’s board of directors covered a large list of topics during its meeting this week.  One of the discussions addressed meeting punctuality, content, and organization.  Directors heard comments praising the Zoom break-out sessions, and expressing concern at some meetings' late starts and late adjournments, irrespective of how good the speakers have been lately.  As a result, club leadership recommitting to the following sequence and timing for meeting agendas.

Here is the plan President James intends to follow each Monday evening:
