During April, our Rotary Club of Kirkland members will have the pleasure of meeting two more students of the month from Lake Washington School District high schools. On April 5, the club's guest will be Hawetan Adugna, a senior at Lake Washington High School. On April 12, the club's guest will be Emma Sammons, a senior at Juanita High School. Please plan on joining their hosts, Mike Hunter and James Nevers, respectively, to welcome these young people to the club.
Margie Glenn is a leader in our Rotary Club's Scholarship Program. Last year, Margie co-funded the Diversity Leadership scholarships for students attending Lake Washington and Juanita high schools. A retired CPA, Margie also co-funded the Business & Accounting scholarship.
Both scholarships were for students who demonstrate financial need, academic promise, a record of community service, leadership, and who promise societal contribution. The diversity scholarships focus on members of one or more ethnic groups recognized by the state, and the business scholarship focuses on students intending to pursue an accounting or business major. The first recipients of the diversity scholarships were Tiffany Zang, who graduated from Lake Washington High School, and Emily Le, who graduated from Juanita High School. No one was awarded a business scholarship in 2020.
Margie Glenn and her co-sponsors continued both scholarships in 2021, and made them available to all of the eligible Lake Washington high schools. Thank you to Margie Glenn for exemplary support of the Rotary Club of Kirkland Scholarship Program.
During April, the Rotary Club of Kirkland's program theme will be the perspectives of and outlooks for larger businesses in the Kirkland area. Tentatively, Rotarians will enjoy presentations from Kristian Uri in the operations group at Fisherman's Finest, a major seafood processing firm located in Kirkland, and Ian Goodhew, with the government affairs staff of Google in Kirkland. Google owns the new Kirkland Urban complex in downtown. Many thanks to Rotarians Rich Bergdahl and Scott Becker, who are organizing the April program series.
