Application Criteria

The Rotary Club of Kirkland, Washington will award several $1,000 scholarships to selected local students for their higher education at accredited institutions in Washington State.  Each scholarship type recognizes students for a different area of achievement; all are designed to support students with financial need and academic promise.
Rotary Club of Kirkland members will interview and select the most promising applicants from each school.  Students are encouraged to apply for as many scholarships for which they qualify using the application form.  Students must attend an accredited higher education institution in Washington State (e.g., college, university, art institute, technical college, cosmetology school, trade school) in the state of Washington.
Scholarship winners will be recognized by Rotary Club of Kirkland at the club’s meeting on Monday, June 1, 2020, 6:15 p.m., and at their school’s annual award ceremony if requested.  Winners must request their scholarship checks prior to December 1, 2020.  Scholarship checks will be issued directly to the higher education institution for tuition, fees, books, supplies and other expenses directly related to the student’s course of study as approved for state or federal financial aid expenditures.

Kirkland Rotary Scholarships

Several Kirkland Rotary Scholarships will be awarded in 2020. The eligibility criteria are:
  • Financial need;
  • Academic promise;
  • Record of school or community service;
  • Promise of societal contribution;
  • Attend an accredited higher education institution in Washington State; and
  • Currently enrolled as a senior at the Lake Washington School District’s Lake Washington High School, Juanita High School, Emerson High School, or International Community School; or currently enrolled at Lake Washington Technical Academy from one of the Lake Washington high schools listed here and graduating in 2020; or currently enrolled at the Lake Washington Institute of Technology.

Charles O. Morgan Communications Scholarship

This scholarship is named for a former publisher of the East Side Journal newspaper.  One “Charles O. Morgan Communications Scholarship” may be awarded in 2020. The eligibility criteria are:
  • Plan a college major in Communications, i.e., Journalism, Theater Arts, English Literature, or Public Relations & Advertising; and
  • Meet the eligibility requirements for a Kirkland Rotary Scholarship as listed above.

Application Instructions

Rotary scholarship applicants must submit timely the following items to your school’s contact; see the contact information listed below:
  1. completed, signed Rotary Scholarship Application.
  2. One written letter of recommendation from a teacher.
  3. An essay of up to 300 words on one page explaining why you should be considered for a Rotary scholarship.  Please do not write more than a 300 word essay.
  4. A certified copy of the high school or institute of technology transcript.
  5. A certification page signed by you, your parent or guardian, and your school’s contact.
Completed applications (including the application form, recommendation letter, essay, transcript, and certification page) are due to the Rotary Club of Kirkland by May 1, 2020Incomplete or late submissions will not be considered. The application must be submitted by the school scholarship contact. Submissions become the property of the Rotary Club of Kirkland and will not be returned.
